In Kunming, Yunnan, stands Asia’s largest wildlife germplasm resource bank, which preserves around 27,000 types of wild biological germplasm resources. Each year, researchers venture deep into the wild to collect seeds, which are then cleaned, photographed, and tested—ensuring that every seed has its own “identity record.” These precious seeds are ultimately stored in a specially designed cold chamber at –20°C, where even DNA enters a dormant state, allowing the seeds to remain viable for long periods. This largest germplasm bank in Asia not only safeguards rare species such as Xumi shanye jie collected from 6,212 meters up Mount Everest, but has also successfully propagated endangered species through tissue culture technology.
