In Yongde County, Lincang, Yunnan, local farmers are increasing their incomes steadily through lotus root cultivation. Chang Jiaying’s family, who specialize in harvesting lotus roots, manage 2.67 hectares of lotus ponds, each acre yielding 30,000 to 35,000 kg of lotus roots. With a purchase price of around 6 yuan per kilogram, this brings them nearly 60,000 yuan in net annual income. With the improvement of traffic along Highway 219, Xiaomengtong Town is planning to build walkways and scenic spots around the lotus ponds. The goal is to keep lotus root harvesting as the main industry while also developing tourism, so that lotus ponds not only produce roots but also scenery—creating more sources of income for farmers.
