Recently, an infrared camera at the Xiaoheishan Provincial Nature Reserve in Longling, Baoshan, Yunnan Province, captured the first frost-backed giant flying squirrel. The frost-backed giant flying squirrel is a vulnerable species in China and a national "three-protected" animal. It is mainly distributed in Yunnan, Sichuan, Hunan, Guangxi and Tibet. The frost-backed giant flying squirrel is named because of its white and grayish-white fur, which looks like a layer of frost. It has flexible limbs and a wing membrane between its front and back feet. It is good at climbing and gliding, and its maximum gliding distance can reach about 50 meters.
